Is Memrise Worth It? A Critical Review of a Popular Language Learning App

In today’s digital era, learning a new language is no longer limited to classrooms and textbooks. With the rise of mobile technology, language learning apps have become powerful tools that allow learners to study anytime and anywhere. Among these, MemRise has gained significant popularity due to its interactive approach and user-friendly design. But how effective is it really when evaluated using educational criteria? This review analyzes MemRise based on key aspects such as relevance, feedback, thinking skills, usability, engagement, sharing, and accessibility.

MemRise is designed to support language learning, particularly in developing vocabulary and listening skills, through spaced repetition and exposure to videos of native speakers. In terms of relevance, the application strongly aligns with language learning objectives, especially for beginners. It helps users recognize words, understand meanings, and improve pronunciation, making it highly suitable for foundational learning. Therefore, MemRise demonstrates a strong connection between its purpose and educational goals.

 In terms of feedback, MemRise provides immediate responses to users answers, such as indicating whether an answer is correct or incorrect. It also reinforces learning by repeating words that users struggle with. However, the feedback remains relatively basic, as it does not include detailed explanations or grammatical insights. While helpful, it lacks depth, placing it at a moderate level in this category.

 In terms of thinking skills, MemRise primarily supports lower-order thinking skills (LOTS), such as remembering and understanding. Most activities focus on memorization, word matching, and recognition tasks. Unfortunately, the app offers limited opportunities for higher-order thinking, such as analyzing, evaluating, or creating language independently. As a result, its contribution to critical thinking development is minimal.

 In terms of ease of use, Memrise excels with its simple and intuitive interface. Users can easily navigate the app without requiring extensive instructions. The clean design and clear structure make it accessible even for first-time users, allowing for a smooth and independent learning experience.

In terms of engagement, MemRise performs very well. The app incorporates gamification elements such as points, levels, and streaks, which make learning more enjoyable and motivating. Additionally, the inclusion of native speaker videos enhances authenticity and helps learners connect language with real-life usage. These features significantly increase user interest and consistency in learning.

However, in the sharing aspect, MemRise shows notable limitations. While the app provides personal progress tracking through XP, streaks, and levels, this data remains private and lacks detailed analytical reporting. There are no strong features for sharing learning outcomes with teachers or peers, nor are there tools for collaboration such as discussions, peer feedback, or group activities. Furthermore, users cannot generate structured reports or portfolios of their learning progress. Consequently, despite having basic performance records, the app falls short in facilitating meaningful sharing and collaboration.

In terms of accessibility and cost, MemRise is widely available on mobile platforms such as Android and iOS, making it accessible to a broad range of users. It also offers a free version, which allows basic access to its features. However, many advanced features, including AI-based tools and full course access, are locked behind a premium subscription. This limits the overall accessibility of its complete learning experience.

From an ELT perspective, MemRise can be effectively used as a supporting tool in language teaching. Teachers can integrate it into lessons as a pre-class activity to introduce vocabulary, or as a homework tool for independent practice. It also supports blended learning environments, where digital tools complement traditional instruction. Furthermore, the app is particularly useful for improving pronunciation and listening through exposure to authentic native speech. However, it should be combined with other teaching strategies, especially for grammar instruction and productive skills such as speaking and writing.

The impact of MemRise on learners is generally positive, particularly in increasing motivation, engagement, and vocabulary retention. Its spaced repetition system helps learners remember words more effectively over time, while gamification encourages consistent practice. Additionally, the app promotes autonomous learning, allowing students to learn at their own pace and according to their individual needs.

In the other hand, MemRise also has several limitations. It focuses heavily on receptive skills rather than productive skills, meaning learners may recognize words but struggle to use them actively. It also provides limited support for grammar and higher-order thinking skills. Moreover, the absence of collaborative features reduces opportunities for interaction, which is an important component of communicative language teaching.

In conclusion, MemRise is an effective and engaging language learning app, particularly for beginners who aim to improve their vocabulary and listening skills. With a total score of 22 out of 28, it can be categorized as a good application and is recommended as a supplementary learning tool. Nevertheless, it should not be relied upon as the sole resource for language learning, as it lacks depth in higher-order thinking development, detailed feedback, and collaborative learning features.
